1,594 diplomas is one for NJCU record books

EAST RUTHERFORD - Reuben Etcubanas leaned forward in his seat at the rear of Continental Airlines Arena yesterday, fingers tensing around the handmade sign in his hands.
It was one of a trio that the woman next to him, Cheryl Guinto, had made for her best friend of three years to celebrate her graduation from New Jersey City University. A name very similar to the one he was waiting for had just been announced through the public address system.
"Almost," he murmured to Guinto, leaning back.
A few anxious minutes later, another name echoed against the walls of the arena - "Kellyne Mendoza!" - and the group jumped up with their signs.
"KAY," they spelled out in glittering pink letters on one side. Then they flipped the poster boards over to display a picture of a heart framed by "WE" on the left and "U" on the right.
Mendoza was one of 1,594 graduates - a school record - who celebrated the end of their college career at NJCU.
